Update on Cait

So a few days before I had Jace I felt like I was getting sick again. I called my GI and she put me on another antibiotic and had me retested for C diff. I was really nervous because if I had it at the time of delivery, I could pass it on to Jace. The results came back negative! We were so relieved and it is such a miracle because I have had C diff for almost four months and this was the first negative test I have had. About a week after we got Jace home I felt sick again, and sure enough I tested positive for C diff again. I was hysterical when we got the test results back. I really thought I was going to die! Everything I had read about C diff just said that people who have chronic C diff have kidney failure and die. After I was calmed down by the doctor we decided the next step would be to do a colonoscopy. Unfortunately, she went out of town before Thanksgiving so we couldn't get it done until after the holiday. I was on zofran all week before I could eat anything. But we finally got the procedure done on Monday. Everything went well. She said that she didn't see any problems with my colon. She also said that most C diff patients have big sores all over their intestines and I didn't have any. So that was good news. The only problem now is that she doesn't know why I didn't heal better if my colon was healthy. She took several pieces out of my colon to do biopsies on and we should get those results tomorrow or Thursday and we'll start another treatment after that. I am just hoping and praying that they can get this resolved! Let me tell you...GI problems are zero fun!

Thanksgiving at the Thompson's

This year was a little different. We spent Thanksgiving by ourselves. We're going to my parents house for Christmas and Jared's parents went to Utah for Thanksgiving so it was up to us to make our Thanksgiving feast. I really thought we would be lonely and sad without a ton of family around but it ended up being one of the funnest Thanksgivings we've had! Jared took off work on Wednesday and didn't have to work until Monday! It was sooo great to have him home for the holiday. The boys woke us up Thursday bright and early and the boys watched the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. We kept our eye out for my brother Dane, who is living in NYC. We cooked all morning and had our feast in the afternoon. We did a pretty good job for our first time!

Later in the afternoon we had the elders over for pies, pumpkin roll and of course LEFTOVERS!!! We played some games until they had to be in for the night. Jared is pretty much the elders best friend...they call him all the time (sometimes they don't even have a reason, they just like to talk to him. It's cute.)

Friday we hit up some of the black Friday sales, watched lots of movies and ate! Saturday we took the little boys to the Gaylord Texan. It was incredible! There was so much to look at! Cole was in Heaven watching all of the miniature trains. We had a blast!

Jace is getting big!! He is one month old now!
What a cute boy!!!

Jace Logan

This past week we welcomed our second little boy into our family! Jace was born at 3:10 pm on October 30, 2009, weighing a whopping 8 pounds 10 ounces! What a chubby little guy!

I called my doctor's office on Thursday because I started spotting and was having some lower back pain. I definately didn't think I was in labor but just wanted to make sure everything was ok. My doctor told me it could possibly be the beginning stages of labor but I had been in to the office just two days earlier and hadn't made any progress. So I went about my day, went grocery shopping, cleaned the house and made dinner. My mom was supposed to be flying in from Boise Thursday night but her flight got delayed until Friday morning. I told her it was no big deal and that her and I would go out for lunch when I picked her up on Friday. Well..... I woke up at about 2 am with terrible back pain. It didn't take long to realize I was having contractions. I timed them for about 2 hours then decided it was time to wake Jared up and tell him. I said "Jared I think I am in labor". He said "Ok" and rolled over and went back to sleep. Typical guy!! At 5:30 I shook him awake and told him my contractions were 3-4 minutes apart and we needed to go to the hospital!

I'm pretty sure Jared didn't believe that I was in labor, or he was just too tired to process it. I packed up a small bag and had him call his parents to come stay with Cole. Once we got to the hospital, they checked me and said that I hadn't dialated at all and that they weren't picking up any contractions on the monitor. I about freaked out and couldn't believe it was a false alarm. Then the next nurse came in and adjusted the monitor to pick up contractions and said I was dialated to a 3. Ten minutes later another nurse came in and said I was dialted to a 5. Ten minutes later another nurse came in and said I was dialted to a 6 1/2!! I was relieved!

Jared's mom had a big meeting that morning in Dallas and so she couldn't stay with Cole all morning. So in between contractions I was calling everyone we could think of to find a babysitter for Cole and someone to pick up my mom from the airport! We're so lucky to have such good friends that could help us out. Jared had to go take care of all that stuff so once I got my epidural I just sat back and watched HGTV waiting for him and my mom to get there.

One hour before Jace was born my mom got to the hospital!!! Lucky her huh? Everything went great with the delivery even though he was so big! My first thought was that he looked just like Cole only fat. haha!

Cole has had a little hard time adjusting to the baby. He loves to give him hugs and kisses but is still very needy for Mama's attention. I am recovering pretty well, I had just forgotten how exhausting it is to have a newborn. I am SO lucky I have had my mom and Jared here to help out. My mom has been taking such good care of us. She's so great....she runs load after load of laundry, cooks us dinner, plays with Cole and helps out at night with Jace.

I feel so lucky to have two such beautiful little boys! Having kids is just so much fun and Jared and I love our boys soooo much!

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!

We've been expecting an e-mail from Des Moines University since Monday and I have been the official e-mail checker since Jared has had to work. Yesterday I was eating my lunch and decided to see if anything came for Jared. When I opened his e-mail had gotten an e-mail saying:
Dear Mr. Thompson
Congratulations! On behalf of the Dean of the College and the Admission Committee, I am pleased to offer you admission to the College of Osteopathic Medicine for the Class of 2014. After meeting and getting to know you, we are confident you will make a valuable contribution to Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s 111 year tradition of excellence in medical education.
WE GOT ACCEPTED TO MEDICAL SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I left my lunch sitting at the table, threw Cole in his carseat and went to go pick up some balloons and candy. We went and suprised Jared at the Pharmacy with the news that he's going to be a doctor! Yesterday was definately one of the happiest days ever. We've been working and sacrificing so much for Jared to be able to do this and it has finally paid off!
We are still going to keep our options open as we hear back from other schools but wed are so pleased that we got accepted to Des Moines. It would really be a great place for us to live and has an awesome program for Jared!

Baby Shower

Last Friday all my girlfriends met and La Madeleine French Cafe for a little girl's night out/ baby shower. It was so much fun to get together for dinner and just have some time away from the guys! I got a bunch of new cute outfits, blankies and essentials. And one of the girls is making baby announcement when the little squirt gets here. I am so lucky to have been able to meet some really fun and sweet girls while living in Lewisville! Now I am officially ready for Jace to come.

A day in Fort Worth

We've been busy, busy!! Two weeks ago, Jared had a medical school interview in Des Moines IA, last week he interviewed in Kansas City MO, and this week he is interviewing in College Station TX. We are so thankful to be having so many interviews this year but we have had very little "family time". When Jared got back from Kansas City he had a day off and we decided to go spend the day in Fort Worth. We had a blast. Each family member got to choose an activity. Our first stop was Jared's choice...UNT College of Osteopathic Medicine. He interviewed there a few months ago and showed Cole and I around the campus. It's a small school but the facilities are really nice and Jared really likes the fact that he would get to do his rotations at Cook Children's Hospital (one of the top rated children's hospitals in the country.)

Our next activity was for litte Cole. We went to the Fort Worth Miniature Railroad. It was the cutest little train that runs right through down town Fort Worth. It was about a 40 minute train ride and only cost 8 bucks for the whole family! I would definately suggest it to anyone looking for something fun to do with the kids. Cole was in heaven! He kept talking about the CHOO CHOO for the rest of the day.

In the late afternoon we visited the Kimbell Art Museum for me. They recently bought Michelangelo's firt known painting and it was on display. The Kimbell is a free museum and is one of my favorite places to visit in the DFW area. After the museum we met Jared's parents for dinner at a place called Nonna Tata. It was quite the culinary experience. To say this place is a hole in the wall is an understatement. The whole resturaunt has maybe five tables! The lady makes all the pasta from scratch and you watch them making your food while you wait. There were probably 4-5 people in the kitchen just drinking wine and making your dinner! It was the most authentic Italian food I have had since I was in Italy!

My "difficile" life

For weeks and weeks now I have been battling with an illness called Clostridium Difficile (C Diff). At first I thought it was normal third trimester GI problems, but after a few weeks of things not clearing up and even an emergency room visit my OB said that I needed to go see a gastrointerologist. I was having terrible stomach cramps, severe diarrhea and wasn't digesting anything. A few tests later it was confirmed that I had C Diff. C diff is a bacterium that causes all sorts of problems ranging from mild diarrhea to life threatening inflamation of the colon. It's caused from taking antibiotics that kill all your good bacteria and the c diff take over your digestive tract. I was written a prescription for Flagyl and after two weeks was feeling much better but never completely better. Only a week after finishing the flagyl I was back in the doctors office with all the same symtoms. Some forms of C diff are flagyl resistant and so I had to be prescribed a medication that is very specific to the treatment of C diff. The wonderdrug is called Vancocin (Vancomycin)and cost 1200 dollars! Jared and I were so relieved that we had Rx insurance....that was until we found out that our insurance wouldn't cover a penny of it! This past weekend was spent trying everything we could think of to get my medication. We called our insurance company, we tried to get a hold of an on-call doctor, we called the drug manufacturer, we contacted a patient assistance program, we called every pharmacy in the area comparing the price of the drug, and we even called Jared's uncle who owns a pharmacy in Florida for some advice. All of our efforts were unsuccessul. We finally decided that I had waited this thing out long enough and went and bought the drug. We are so lucky and blessed that we have wonderful parents that offered to help us out with the cost of the medication! I still can't help but think that everytime I take one of those little pills its costing $20 bucks! All I can say is that this had better work! Its been a very frustrating couple of weeks and with my due date right around the corner, I really need to get myself healthy so that little Jace can be healthy too! We're still not sure how this is going to effect my delivery. If I still am positive for C diff when I go into labor I will probably have to have a C section. Another option is inducing labor very soon after I am done taking the Vancocin to make sure that I don't have c diff when I deliver. I have a doctors appointment on Thursday to talk about all of this.
Luckily, this is only affecting me and not Jared and Cole too. Jared is in Kansas City, Missouri interviewing at yet another medical school today. We're keeping our fingers crossed, we should be hearing back from Des Moines University within a week or so!
I have been loving the cooler weather lately. I wouldn't call it "fall" weather but at least its not in the 100's anymore! I can hardly wait to take Cole trick-or-treating for his first time this year. We got his Halloween costume a few weeks ago and he's going to be a turtle. He isn't very familiar with turtles though so he calls it a dinosaur! He's such a fun and smart little boy!
